7:01 pm
michael, thank you again for
7:02 pm
joining us tonight for a very lively hour, as always. >> thank you. >> do something. make your voice known. that's all for us tonight. anderson cooper starts now. early in the war, cnn's chief medical correspondent dr. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >> breaking news tonight. ten years after we found chemical weapons in iraq, possibly using the chemical weapons that we know he has right now. >> you're going to hear from one very brave and lucky young man tonight. michelle bhrks achman, she claims that president obama is wasting her money on his lavish lifestyle. we tracked her down and asked her to see how she responded. basically, she wouldn't stop walking or running, almost. we begin now with breaking news.
7:03 pm
news that just triggered military action by the united states in syria. the news tonight that the possib possibilitity might be doing the one thing that could trigger american military action. might be using chemical weapons. crossing a redline that president obama himself lay down. now, they have used chemical weapons, that would leave the president with a major challenge as he heads tonight to israel. now, the suggestion that kem wall weapons might have been used came just a few hours ago today from mike rogers, a high probability to believe that chemical weapons have been used. chief white house correspondent is already in israel. she joins us now by phone. so, jessica, you have senator finestein saying i think the
7:04 pm
probableties are very high and i think the white house needs to be prepared. >> anderson, white house officials say that they're still assessing the reports that chemical weapons were used. we know there will be consequences. he has said you will be held accountable. today, his chief of staff said it would be a game changer if, in fact, chemical weapons were used. now, the president has not specified what he means, exactly, when he said his regime would be held accountable. there have been reports. i think the u.s. has developed a plan for direction action against syria. but there's no indication that the president would necessarily pursue it. and let's be realistic, it's hard to imagine that the u.s.
7:05 pm
would take any direct action against syria when the president is visiting the neighborhood.
7:06 pm
>> bob is a former cia officer and he's experienced the region. fran is in the bush 43 administration. she currently sits on the exterm advisory committee. if we take senator finestein that there's a high probability that these weapons have been used, that it may well take some
7:07 pm
action. what does that action exactly look like. >> as you say, as chair of the senate intelligence committee, we have to assume she's been briefed and there's a basis for her statement. so we ought to take that pretty seriously. she also went onto say that the u.s. is able to verify that. but they'll be able to do that pretty short order. what that means, anderson, you do what you did in libya, which is only air strike using a coalition. owe're going to need some forces in the ground. there are known to be about four dozen chemical weapon sites. and that underscores the magnitude of this problem.
7:08 pm
the president presumably will want to put a coalition together. it will take a lot of people to be able to do this effectively. it will require air assets but it will also require ground forces. >> bob, obviously a lot of viewers when they hear the idea that there may be chemical weapons, a, obviously there's a lot of concern. there will be a lot of skepticism based on what happened in iraq. how does anyone know that chemical weapons have been used? how do you verify 100% that they have been used? >> there are western groups around aleppo where these weapons have been used. they'll be able to send evidence out in the next couple of days. the traces of this on the skin will be obvious. doctors will know what they're looking at. they'll figure out what kind it was. i think it was a fairly light chemical weapon, maybe chlorine. early reports are saying this. so i think we'll know pretty sure in the next two or three days. people will be taken out to turkey and the rest of it. i think diane feinstein is absolutely right. if these weapons were used we've crossed the threshold. syria is completely a mess now, chaotic. the resistance groups,
7:09 pm
opposition are broken up into little pieces. you have al qaeda there. we simply cannot let it happen that al qaeda gets these weapons or that the regime turns them loose on the cities. something is going to happen very soon. >> bob, why can't you just bomb these sites? >> they're saying they're in tai dozen sites. you can't just bomb them. they may bomb israel. as diane feinstein said, these people are desperate. the regime, more and more cities are falling in areas and as we've said all along, they will use these things and something has to happen. you also have to look at syria has become a proxy war for iran, russia, saudi arabia and turkey. everybody is pouring arms into the country. you know, the situation cannot continue as it is without running into a catastrophe with it involving chemical weapons. >> everybody is pouring arms into the country.
7:10 pm
you know, the situation cannot continue as it is. without running into a can tast ra fi when it involves chemical weapons. >> what goes on in the white house in a situation like this? particularly where the president is heading to the region. >> anderson, you can assume that the secret service would advise him not to go. >> is taking he and his entire detail through a chemical weapons drill. they were several hours of air so that they could get to a safe and clean fight. you would have taken them, while they're on the plane, through a complete drill about what to expect and what the safety and decam nation procedures would be. certainly, that's what i would have done. >> again, i just want to reach
7:11 pm
our viewers. i think the probableties are very high that we're going into some very dark times. the regime is saying that the rebels are the ones that have used chemical weapons. they're saying that the regime has used them. each size has incentive to accuse the other. but using these weapons, how do you prove who actually used them? >> that's the whole problem. we're not in touch with the regime. neither side can be blamed. but the point is, that once the chemical weapons come out. >> that's when there is no choice. it doesn't matter what it is. put a blockade on the country. don't let the artillery be deployed. you can check this from the air. you can counter it. anything to prevent, you know, especially serin from being used, would put this conflict in a whole other realm.
7:12 pm
>> they say they don't have the capableties. do you buy that? >> if you do buy that, you're worried if you put -- what you really worry about is the regime loading these chemical weapons onto a missile. we've seen them bomb inside lebanon. you can understand all of the neighbors are rightly concerned that the regime itself has the capable ility. no reason to think that the rebels do have that capability. but you worry about if they were inclined, you put it with an explosive and you get some nation of the weapon if you put it together. so there is less concern with the rebels and certainly more concern with the neighbors of the regime. >> why can't you just bomb these sites? i know there's mumt pl sites, but would that actually destroy the weapons?
7:13 pm
why do you need troops on the ground? >> well, the concern, anderson, if you talk to folks who have been involved in military planning, is that the air strike will actually, the detonation itself, will take the chemical weapon and raise it up into the air and allow it to spread and put more civilians at risk. what you want to do is minimalize fatalities and contamination. so you're better to try to cure the site i think that's why you've seen the military throughout the region. >> yeah, a very risky of ration. appreciate your expertise out there. we see the president about to take off for israel. they'll be following our coverage reporting for us from there. let us know what you think if the regime has used these weapons. what do you think the u.s. should do? let's talk about it on twitter
